The CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test) is an alternative set of cognitive tests used by many schools in the UK, Ireland, and internationally. The tests were created by GL Education.

Cognitive Ability Test – Assessment for Employee Candidates: The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is a group-administered K–12 assessment published by Riverside Insights and intended to estimate students’ learned reasoning and problem-solving abilities through a battery of verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal test items.

Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Practice Test 2023 [Online]:

Tests of Cognitive Ability, Tests of Achievement, and Tests of Interest Level. Initially, no overriding theoretical model guided the development of the cognitive tests. Historically, test development began with a number of controlled experiments for measuring learning abilities. The first test constructed was Visual-Auditory Learning (Woodcock, 1958). Additional cognitive tests were developed to create a heterogeneous mix of broad and complex cognitive abilities.

Each level of the CogAT includes test batteries with verbal, quantitative, or nonverbal items. Scores are reported separately for each category, and the three batteries may be administered separately.

Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Practice Test

The most common ability tests used in private and home schools are the Cognitive Abilities Test™ (CogAT®) and the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test® (OLSAT®). The CogAT is a companion product to the Iowa achievement test. The OLSAT is a companion to the Stanford achievement test.

CogAT paper version

While the CogAT and OLSAT tests measure cognitive ability, most states require that a true IQ test is supervised by a licensed psychologist. The most commonly used IQ tests are the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, (also known as the WISC test), the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities, and the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children. These tests would allow you to assess if your child is working at their ability or below it, or above it. They usually cost quite a bit more than the CogAT or OLSAT but yield information concerning such things as short-term memory, long-term memory, cognitive fluency, visual-auditory learning, spatial relations and more. They help to diagnose learning differences and are used in developing IEP or 504 plans for testing accommodations or modifications. Triangle Education Assessments carries the CogAT and OLSAT tests in paper and online versions.
